If you've been looking for something high energy, raw and youthful that hits with the same unpolished punch as a basement show in the '90s, you need to put Aptumsums on your radar. Their sound is a blend of genres that feels both like a throwback to early grunge and a fresh, modern take on alternative rock.
They excel at weaving crunchy, distorted riffs with sudden, melodic interludes that keep the tracks from ever feeling static. The rhythm section is just as aggressive - the drumming is complex and the bass provides a thick foundation that gives the whole project its signature grungy gravity. On top of it all, the vocals shift effortlessly from emotive, melodic singing to raw, intense screams.
Their lyrics capture the emotional peaks and valleys of searching for meaning while the world moves too fast, and you don't even need to speak Latvian to capture the intense emotional delivery.
Last Friday I went to their concert and I have always been a fan of live music, however their stage presence is completely mesmerizing. The sound is intentionally unpolished, the members are always in movement whether it's headbanging or synchronized moves. Their songs flow perfectly together, not giving the listener time to breathe as they keep pulling you in with new excitement. I don't even know what to compare them to.
Aptumsums is truly a hidden gem and the kind of discovery that reminds me of why I started this blog.
They don't have any recordings on streaming services, at least I haven't found any, but if you search for ''Aptumsums'' on YouTube there should be two videos (links below).
