Forever Wings Fold
A band from Fullerton, California, active around 2005-2008
Genre: post-hardcore; melodic hardcore; alternative rock
Forever Wings Fold captures that specific moment in time where melody and aggression were fighting for dominance. Their album ''We Are the Media'' dropped on valentines day in 2008, which is funny to think about, because this music is not romantic at all. It is loud, angry, and fast. It's like the soundtrack for someone who hates that holiday.
The band plays a mix of heavy rock and emotional melodies. The guitars are fast and catchy, and the singer switches between nice, clean singing and loud screaming.
Naming the album "We Are the Media" feels ahead of its time. Back in 2008 social media was just starting to get huge. The lyrics move beyond standard heartbreak, touching on themes of how media consumption changes us, and how we are always being watched. It’s a bit paranoid, but it fits the intense music perfectly.
Songs that stood out to me:
"Into the Lion's Mouth" - opens with a driving, frantic energy that sets the tone for the whole album. The song is full of energy and the guitar parts are sharp and cut right through the noise.
"Ashes to Oceans" - this track shows that the band can be heavy without just playing fast. It is definitely their most emotional song.
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" - it is the most technically complex track. The song feels like it is stuck between two bad choices, just like the title says. It starts fast but ends with a heavy, slow breakdown.
After Forever Wings Fold disbanded, they went on to form the instrumental prog-metal powerhouse Night Verses. Aric Improta also went on to be the drummer for The Fever 333, becoming famous for backflipping while playing.
Similar to the melodic aggression of Funeral for a Friend, Fightstar, or early Thrice.
