Active since 2019
Genre: noise rock; shoegaze; psychedelic rock
Their music is a blend of garage rock grit and psychedelic repetition. A distorted bass that acts as the lead instrument paired with delicate melodies. jonabug uses distortion as an emotional texture rather than just a sonic tone, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously heavy and fragile.
Lyrically, the project explores themes of isolation, self-deprecation, and the haze of youth. The vocals are often buried deep in the mix, acting more like an instrument than a centerpiece, which forces the listener to lean in and get lost in the sonic sludge.
Songs that stood out to me:
"look at me" - leans harder into rock. It is raw, confrontational, and brimming with attitude. The guitar work here is jagged, piercing through the heavy low-end. You can hear the anger in the vocals, balancing narcissism with self-destruction.
"n°365" - driven by a motorik drum beat and a punchy bassline. The vocals are easy going, but also feel urgent. It is repetitive and hypnotic.
Similar to the fuzz of Ty Segall and the frantic energy of Thee Oh Sees (OSEES).
