Polycephaly
Latvia
Active since 2022
Genre: death metal; latvian metal; sludge metal
Polycephaly, a name that originally promised a literal two-headed vocal attack and has since evolved into a singular, crushing force of death-sludge that feels more like an ancient organism than a four-piece band.
The EP ''Silence'' has been praised for its professional sound and "international potential." It is less of an introduction and more of a manifesto. The title track, Silence, is often cited as a standout hit that features a mix of aggressive vocals and more melodic, quiet sections.
While many of their fellow bands in the Baltic scene are content to tread the well-worn paths of blackened thrash or pure hardcore, Polycephaly operates on the intersection of death metal and sludge, occasionally changing into a groove-heavy "death’n’roll"
Songs that stood out to me:
''Silence'' - of course. The vocals possess a visceral, serrated edge that cuts through the instrumentation, only to recede into moments of haunting, melodic quiet.
''Salvation'' - it is the most concentrated dose of Polycephaly’s "death’n’roll", stripping away the gothic pauses of the preceding track in favor of a relentless, mid-tempo trudge. It lacks the hyper-speed blast beats of traditional death metal, opting instead for a tectonic rhythmic shift.
Similar to a mix of Crowbar and early Entombed.
