The Burns
Moscow, Russia
Active during 2006-2011
Genre: indie rock; garage rock; britpop
The Burns are a perfect time capsule of the "Moscow Anglo-Rock" wave of the late 2000s. Their sound reflects the Western indie explosion of that era, but filtred through the gritty lens of the Moscow club scene.
Their music relies on driving drum beats paired with jangly electric guitar riffs, that occasionally break into fuzzy, garage rock chaos. It captures a fleeting moment of urban restlessness and youth.
Songs that stood out to me:
"Avail" - opens with a driving, melancholic bassline before exploding into a chorus that feels both desperate and incredibly catchy. It strikes a perfect balance between being moody and high-energy, serving as a darker counterpart to the dance-punk of the era.
"Get Fat" - leans much harder into the garage rock aesthetic than their later material. It is aggressive, possesses a sharper punk edge, and maintains a relentless, fast tempo throughout.
If you are a fan of The Libertines, The Strokes, or the early works of Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys, this is a hidden gem worth digging up.
